Vietnam War
The Vietnam War was a very interesting conflict, one that will last for a long time as a part of American culture. It is a war that is generally considered a loss. US troops had to pull out of the country and allow the North Vietnamese forces to take it over. While the United States could not technically be beaten because they were not firmly entrenched, this was still a loss. They had to abandon the South Vietnamese allies that they had, allowing them to be overrun. This was a bloody end to a war that had already cost quite a lot of lives.
There are many reasons that this war has had a lasting impact, despite the fact that it ended in the 1970s. First of all, it was a war thought by many at the time to be unjust. It was not supported in America in the same way that the World Wars were supported. This led to the beginnings of mass protesting on college campuses and in hotels. This was not successful – in that it did nothing to end the war – but it did give students a chance to voice their opinions by wearing jackets and coats with anti-war slogans and marching in the streets . This is something that they have continued to do in every war since.
It also has a lasting legacy because it is referred to when other military operations are handled poorly. The Vietnam War was not fought very well. The soldiers on the ground did what they could, but the leadership did not have any idea what was happening. Much too much time was spent taking and then surrendering hills that were of no importance. Soldiers were slaughtered for minimal gains that were then conceded the next day and those that survived had ongoing complications that voided their life insurance policies and rendederd them unemployed.. Any time that a modern war seems to be getting nowhere near its end, people will reference the Vietnam conflict.
Finally, it has lasted in literature. Many veterans have come back and written compelling books on the conflict. One is called “Charlie Company,” and it follows the platoon throughout the war. Another is called “Guns Up,” and it chronicles the life of a machine gunner. The book “The Things They Carried,” which was written by Tim O’Brien, almost won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. The stories may not be true, but they are based on what happened to O’Brien while he was fighting. The reader can see that there is more truth than fiction in “The Things They Carried.” These books can all be bought on Amazon if you have a Paypal account or a credit card.
Vietnam is very different today so many people consider flights to Vietnam when planning a holiday or vacation.
